She knows why.
When Makokun returns to the Southwest Forest after a quick trip to the Bank and Shop in Megalopolis, Dailan is being attacked by Forest Mantises.
Their claws are long and sharp and the Buffalo is doing his best to fight off the attack, but he won't give up on beating the Forest Wasp on his other side either. Spitting a curse under his breath, Makokun runs straight into the fray, flinging Mana Arrows left and right. It takes more than one attack because he didn't have time to cast Mist to buff his magical power, but soon enough the Mantis is dead and so is the Wasp, and now Makokun's pockets are a bit heavier with galders.
"DAILAN STOP DYING ON ME," Makokun yells, and it takes more than one Cure to keep the Buffalo on his feet. But soon enough, he's fine and grinning in that stupidly stubborn way of his.
"You didn't see that," Dailan says, rubbing the back of his hand across his cheek to remove the smear of blood left there. "Besides, I didn't faint this time."
"Only because I got here just in time to save your stupid ass."
"Hey!"
"Whatever," the annoyed Dragon throws over his shoulder, already turning away to inspect the forest for good drilling patches as he guzzles down two blue Potions. Aah, that hits the spot and he perks up quickly. "Let's just find those quest items we need. Those Mantises are annoying, and the Wasps only drop Guns for me and I keep getting heavy!"
Dailan scuffs his toe across the ground, frowning at the ragged dirt of the path that's been trod upon and probably dug through dozens of times before. They make their way slowly through the forest, looking for good drilling areas. Actually, Makokun is the one looking for good drilling areas while Dailan amuses himself with picking fights with Wasps for their Honey. Everytime he stops, the Dragon's tail lashes with annoyance, but he's right behind Dailan's shoulder, casting Cures to keep him healthy and taking down the Mantises attracted to the sounds of fighting with easy grace and buffed Mana Arrows that rip through the air.
Finally, Makokun has to stop, hands braced on his knees and the tip of his staff dragging in the dirt as he pants for breath. He's heavy with loot from the monsters and lightheaded and dizzy from mana exhaustion. Looking past his long hair, he can see that Dailan is little better, also weighted down by loot and his body bruised and bloodied, but his lips still smiling. The Dragon feels a little bad for a moment, that he's too weak to cast a Cure for his friend. He fumbles into his sidebag, reaching for the massive stock of potions that he always has to keep handy, and finds that he's running low.
The Buffalo catches his movement and one calloused hand lands on Makokun's, halting the search. He gives a questiong look, but Dailan just grins then flops down in the shade of a tree. His heavy sword is dropped within easy reach, as well as his shield, and he tucks his hands under his head and gets comfortable.
"Let's nap. We won't waste any potions that way. Besides, I'm tired from fighting all those monsters."
"Everytime you nap here, you turn into Mantis bait!" Makokun huffs, but kneels down in the shade anyway. It feels pretty nice to be off his feet for a little bit.
"But you'd protect me, right?" Dailan says, with an outrageous flutter of his eyelashes. "You're so manly and strong."
Makokun screeches something unintelligble and beats on Dailan's arm and chest with one hand. Dailan just laughs and takes the abuse, because everyone knows Dragons are absolute crap with physical attacks and Buffaloes are meant to take abuse. Makokun finally settles down with another huff, curling up with his tail around his body and snubs Dailan. Dailan pouts and crawls closer, making himself a nice ball of warmth that a cold-blooded Dragon can appreciate.
And then Dailan rustles through his pocket, and pulls out a slightly crumbly package.
"Biscuit?" he offers with a teasing grin.
The Dragon screeches again, and the beating resumes, but the Buffalo laughs the whole time.
