This is just to make it official for those who don't know, but I'm leaving LJ completely. For the rest of this week at least. Tomorrow is the Bar Exam and it runs for three days, so don't expect to see me about at all until Thursday night. Or even until the weekend since I plan on spending Thursday after the Bar drunk and crying. No online time for me at all. *whines* It will be hard, but I know I can do it.

So, because I'm a total h0r like that, I am declaring this to be a spam post. Go ahead. Run wild! Give me fics, give me links, give me pics, just babble to your heart's content and rape my inbox so I have something to see when I finally DO come back to the wonderful world of LJ. I don't even care if you write me a drabble and post it one word at a time. XD;

Though, I've tried to make a spam post before and it failed a bit miserably, so I don't have very high expectations this time around. Feel free to prove me wrong though!

"Ah," said Duo, twisting himself about in a strange manner, "ah. It oughta take just a sec, Wu --"

"Get your lazy butt moving, Maxwell!" the same voice hollered again, this time accompanied by a staccato of laughter from the others.

Wufei saw Duo's face tighten, his mouth thin to a straight line before he was turning away, a bounce in his step and a swing in his braid as he started off towards the voices. "Yeah, yeah, keep yer pants on!" he called back, leaving Wufei to stare in bewilderment.

Duo returned a few minutes later, and picked up the conversation as though nothing had happened. He was called away again, this time to pick up the empty mugs and return them to the kitchenette. Wufei was annoyed, and impatient; they didn't have time to socialize. He kept the conversation brusque and businesslike, and Duo seemed perfectly willing to leave it that way.

It wasn't until he went home that evening that he realized what was wrong.

The next morning, he caught Duo before they both entered the conference. "Why do they treat you like that?" he demanded, getting straight to the point.

Duo looked away, and crossed his arms over his chest. "What -- can'cha guess?" he asked, a strangely intense drawl to his voice.

Wufei shook his head, once, fiercely. "Did they find out that you were -- a pilot?" he said. "All our records should be sealed -- Une will have a fit if she finds out that her security has been compromised."

Duo sighed, and ran a hand through his bangs. "It ain't that, okay?" he said. "It's just -- one of those things, nothing ta do with Gundam pilots."

"Then what is it?" Wufei said, tightening his hand on Duo's arm. "If they have some kind of hold on you..."

"It's nothin' like that!" Duo said, voice raising as his temper flared. "Look -- bein' from a place like L2 -- even if they haven't seen my records -- well, that leaves its mark."

He stared at Duo, for several seconds until the light dawned. "Why do you let them boss you around?" Wufei said, shocked. "Report them for insubordination -- go to Une, for heaven's sake. They --"

Duo interrupted again. "Une can't order a whole buildin' of people ta change their minds on somethin', okay?" he said wearily. "If I try to confront'em, they just -- go underground. Get nasty. Better just -- leave it. I'm used to it."

"It's unjust!"

Duo's mouth twisted. "Well --" he said. "Justice may be blind, an' all, but she's still got ears."

He shrugged Wufei off his arm, and entered the conference room.

It was just a fact finding mission -- go in, scout around, bring back patterns. The only real question was which agent to send in.

One of the lieutenants, he of the raucous voice, suddenly looked up with a grin. "We should send Maxwell," he said. "At least then we can be sure that we won't spend too much on hotels."

There was an outbreak of laughter, racing around the table like a disease. Duo, staring fixedly at the table, said nothing. A surge of fury rose in Wufei, and before he knew what he was doing he stood up from his chair, stalked around to face the offended, and slammed his hands down on the varnished wood hard enough to make papers rattle and two pens jump to the floor. The man looked up, laughter gurgling away as he caught sight of the expression on Wufei's face.

"You will not speak of your, your superiors," and the hiss in his voice gave it just the right spin, "in that manner. Apologize to Captain Maxwell, unless you wish me to write you up for gross insubordination."

The man gulped, and looked around for support. Scrunching down a little in his seat, his eyes darted from Wufei to Duo, and he gurgled something that sounded like an apology.

Wufei grunted, and straightened up. Across the table, Duo was staring at him.

"If you would care to continue," he said formally, and returned neatly to his seat. The lieutenant, he was pleased to notice, stayed subdued for the rest of the meeting.

He slipped a brief note to Duo, before they adjourned. He didn't stay around to watch Duo read it, but made his way back to his desk.

The next day, though, when he returned, he found his note folded back on his desk, with a return message.

You too, it read, in familiar messy handwriting. If you ever need something, just shout it out, and I'll come to your call.

Wufei smiled, slightly, and put the note in his drawer.
