Title: Eavesdropping
Fandom: Kingdom Hearts II
Pairings: mild Leon/Sora, implied Riku/Sora if you wanna see it that way
Rating: R
Warnings: boykissing, angst of the Riku-sort, possibly a May-December romance?
Spoilers: KHII until after Halloweentown, maybe? Also spoilery about Riku's appearance. Playing fast and loose with the game timeline here. Mild spoiler (sorta) for FFVIII if you catch it.
Summary: Eavesdroppers never hear anything good about themselves, and see things they may not want.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Riku told himself that what he was doing was necessary. Not that it was right, or that it was good, but necessary. He told himself that everyday; every long day since Sora had fallen asleep. Every day for a whole year (sometimes more than once) while Namine quietly pieced together Sora's broken memories, Riku told himself that doing DiZ's dirty work was necessary. It had to be. After all, if he had taken that so tempting offer, he'd be asleep like Sora. Then what would happen? Namine could not -- would not -- fight and had to be protected as she strung together thoughts and dreams like beads on a wire. DiZ himself could not afford to be seen by Organization XIII. If Riku had not been there, who would fight? Who would protect Namine? Who would have brought in Roxas -- Riku had to tell himself things were necessary every minute of those long fights -- so that Sora's memory could be restored faster?
Riku was doing what was necessary, and it paid off, because Sora woke up.
But after that, Riku refused to show himself, and hid any knowledge of himself from Sora. He even forced the King to make that promise, because while things had been necessary, Riku had still been ashamed. How could he face Sora now? He had hoped once to be there at Sora's side the second he awoke, ready with a quick smile and a teasing laugh and joke about Sora being lazy. But all those hopes had been dashed when Riku realized his face would not be the one Sora saw.
Clenching his hands -- such large unfamiliar hands -- around Way to the Dawn, Riku told himself that staying hidden was necessary.
Sora was awake and that was all that mattered. Organization XIII still wanted him, and someone had to help keep them off, because Sora was absolutely clueless most of the time. Yes, it was necessary for Riku to stay in the shadows and guide Sora's steps, but it wasn't necessary for Sora to see Riku's new face.
Still, Riku allowed himself the guilty pleasure of watching Sora from afar (the way he had watched Sora's sleeping form through that crystal dome), and couldn't help but be amazed. Sora running and jumping and fighting was such a contrast to the memories of Sora laying deathly still in sleep. Riku liked this louder Sora better.
Sora was in Hollow Bastion now (Riku couldn't follow him to every world, but Sora always returned here for supplies), and it was a bit of downtime between hunting Heartless and Nobodies. Sora was swinging his keyblade through practice moves under Leon's ever watchful eyes, while cheerful lights and music drifted up from the people in the square below. Sora's ever increasing glances told Riku that his friend wanted to be down amongst the merrymakers (even in darkness, people needed a little light to keep going), but Leon's strict glare kept Sora in place.
Finally, Sora's attention wavered enough and his blade dipped, and Leon sighed in annoyance as he caught Sora's attention.
"You're dropping your guard on the left side, Sora," Leon said, moving behind Sora and helping him hold the blade correctly, guiding him through the form. "I told you about that before."
Sora just gave an embarrassed chuckle, trying his best to give Leon a puppy dog look. "I know, I know! But this is just different and new, but it's so awesome you're teaching me!"
"Swing this way, and twist like that," was all Leon said in reply, still trying to hold onto the tattered remains of his lesson. "Then you can come up with the blade again when you whirl around."
Sora managed the move with Leon guiding him, but once the swordsman stepped back to judge, Sora dropped his left side again. Leon shook his head, and Sora drooped, and Riku suddenly felt the urge to punch Leon for making Sora lose his happy smile.
"Sorry, Leon. I'll get it right, I promise! Riku used to mope and whine all the time when we were practicing."
"Where did you pick up your skills anyway? Was Riku the one who taught you?"
"Only if teaching means Riku kicking my butt everyday until I learned to block him," Sora laughed brightly, one hand ruffling through his hair.
The older man just gave Sora a look of exasperation. "That's a sloppy way of teaching. But you managed to pick up alot that way."
Sora's face went calm and contemplative. "Riku taught me practically everything, you know. I always wanted to beat him. I wish I could find him...."
Leon's expression went thoughtful, and he just raised one hand to lay it on the top of Sora's head, ruffling the spiky brown hair even more. "You will, Sora."
They stood like that for a long moment, Leon's hand in Sora's hair, until a loud shout and cheer came from the square. The mood shattered, Sora scampered from under Leon's hand to look over the edge of the roof, with the older man following after. From his perch even higher, Riku craned to see what the fuss was. The people had formed a circle of couples and the music drifted into something pleasant and soon the square was filled with dancing. Sora hummed with the tune, his blue eyes drinking in the sight of the happy people.
"Hey, Leon? Do you know how to dance like that?" Sora asked, pointing at the crowd.
Leon blinked at the question. "It's a traditional kind of dance, Sora."
"That doesn't answer my question!"
Suddenly realizing he'd be hounded, Leon muttered, "Yes, I know how to dance."
"Great!" Sora crowed, pumping one fist in the air and his keyblade disappearing from the other. "You can teach me how to do that then. Because there was a dance in Halloweentown, too, and Jack and Sally knew what to do, but I just watched. I really wanted to dance! But I didn't know how."
Leon gave Sora a smirk, catching the slight tinge of pink over Sora's cheeks and his dorky smile. "Dance with Kairi?"
"With Riku, too!" Sora insisted, the blush still on his face. "Riku doesn't know how to dance, and if I do, then I'll be able to be better than him at something for once!"
Riku watched as Leon just shook his head, and felt rather warm inside, knowing that Sora still thought of him. Of course, he knew that Sora was searching for him, but this confirmation made everything more real somehow.
Sora continued to wheedle and beg, but Leon continued to shake his head, refusing to teach Sora the steps. Finally, Sora whirled around from the edge of the roof, a smile on his face and one finger held up in front of him.
"Just one dance!"
Leon's expression did something funny, as if he wanted to do too many things at one time. Sora continued to smile, blue eyes lit up in eagerness, and finally Leon caved.
"Just one..."
After that was a flurry of movement as Sora nearly tackled Leon with an enthusiastic hug of thanks, and Leon guided Sora's hands to the proper position for dancing much the same way he had guided Sora through the blade forms. There had only been one whine of discontent from the keyblade bearer ("Why do I have to be the girl?!"), but soon enough the music started up in another set, and Leon spun Sora around.
They danced.
They spun and twirled and sooner than expected, Sora had caught on to all the steps. There had been some fumbling and stepped toes at first, but Sora had the basics down. Leon had smiled at that, then spun Sora into more complicated turns and steps, which the brown-haired boy copied perfectly. The two of them danced together on the rooftop, their actions melding perfectly with the paired dancers in the square, only there was no one else around to see -- except Riku.
Riku watched as Sora's smile went positively radiant, his hands holding firmly to Leon's hand and shoulder as they danced together, going well beyond the 'one' dance Leon had reluctantly accepted. Under the stars and the night sky, they danced, until Leon finally spun Sora out and tugged him back into his arms in a playful dip. Sora's laughter was bright and exuberant and only stopped when Leon gave him a gentle smile, then bent his head in to press a quick kiss to Sora's lips.
"... that's something else you can be better at," Leon said, setting Sora on his feet with pink on his cheeks. But then the bright determined light was back in Sora's eyes and he grabbed Leon by his jacket and pulled him down again.
"Then you better teach me more!"
And Riku cursed the need for things to be necessary.
