"Ah," said Duo, twisting himself about in a strange manner, "ah. It oughta take just a sec, Wu --"
"Get your lazy butt moving, Maxwell!" the same voice hollered again, this time accompanied by a staccato of laughter from the others.
Wufei saw Duo's face tighten, his mouth thin to a straight line before he was turning away, a bounce in his step and a swing in his braid as he started off towards the voices. "Yeah, yeah, keep yer pants on!" he called back, leaving Wufei to stare in bewilderment.
Duo returned a few minutes later, and picked up the conversation as though nothing had happened. He was called away again, this time to pick up the empty mugs and return them to the kitchenette. Wufei was annoyed, and impatient; they didn't have time to socialize. He kept the conversation brusque and businesslike, and Duo seemed perfectly willing to leave it that way.
It wasn't until he went home that evening that he realized what was wrong.
