... so any death threats get sent to her, okay? I was really iffy on writing this bunny, and I still am. I have this scene firmly in my head, so I am offering it up for sacrifice.

*pokes prose*

I don't know if I can keep writing without crying every other line...

Title: Letters
Fandom: Gundam Wing
Pairing: 1x2x1... in a certain way
Warnings: ANGST ANGST ANGST. Romance. Yaoi. Also death. The basic stuff from me. Keep the tissues handy. This is vaguely based off of a recent Thai movie, "The Letter." However, I have not seen the movie myself, only read a little blurb in the newspaper.

Chapter One -- Correspondence

The afternoon was starting to fade into cool evening by the time Duo Maxwell drove up his street and parked his battered blue truck in the driveway of a small cottage-style house. Keys in hand and juggling two bags of groceries in his arms, Duo stopped off at the mailbox, waving to Ms. Wilson, who was customarily sitting in her rocker on the porch just on the other side of the street. The whole neighborhood had a homey and comforting small town feel, something that Duo appreciated and what had drawn him to put down roots in the area in the first place. He traversed over his lawn -- making a mental note to water the yard this evening -- only to hear the familiar scratching and whining from the other side of the door as he pressed his key into the lock.

Once the door was pulled open, Duo was nearly trampled by Odin. The black labrador, despite being nearly full grown, was still as excitable as a puppy, and this reminded Duo of how had seen the abandoned puppy in a cardboard box and decided that Odin could come live with him. Odin had agreed amiably, covering Duo's face in slobbery little licks, and Duo's heart had been lost.

"Whoa! Hey! Let me get inside!" Duo exclaimed light-heartedly, closing the front door and trying to make his way through the house with the dog underfoot. He entered the kitchen, dropping off his mail on the counter as well as the groceries, before bending down to ruffle his hands through Odin's pitch black scruff. The dog wiggled happily, his tail wagging a mile a minute and Duo was glad that at least someone was home to greet him so well. Loneliness was not a good roommate, and Duo quickly shut off that line of thinking before it went too far, turning to putting away the week's groceries instead.

Fresh milk, meats, and vegetables went into the refrigerator, the ice cream in the freezer, and the cans of Odin's dog food on the bottom shelf of the cupboard. Duo always did his best to keep his kitchen somewhat organized and tidy, but he still managed to accumulate unidentifiable foil-wrapped packages in the fridge and freezer, and sometimes the dishes piled in the sink until Duo's own need for clean dishes outweighed his laziness about washing up. That wasn't a problem today though, and Duo made sure to check Odin's bowl of water and give him a small biscuit to tide him over before dinner.

A quick check of messages on the vidphone indicated that two telemarketers had called while he was out, as well as a brief message from Wufei, who requested Duo to call back when he had the time. Checking the time, Duo decided that the call could wait until later in the evening, when he was sure the Chinese man would be home.

With a sigh of content, Duo kicked off his faded sneakers and reached for the stack of mail. He rifled through the miscellaneous junk mail and bills, setting them aside in different piles. Duo always remained amazed that even with the current technology, people STILL liked to mail out paper. It was so time-consuming and inefficient. He'd take an e-mail or vidmessage any day; at least they were delivered almost instantly and were assured of reaching their destination.

A small frown flickered over Duo's face as he reached a small envelope that seemed out of place amongst the other correspondence. Thinking that he might have received a neighbor's mail by mistake, Duo looked the letter over. The white of the plain envelope looked rather faded and slightly yellowed, but his name and address were clearly typed on the front. There was no return address, but the postal stamp indicated that the letter had been sent from not too far away. He'd never seen anything like this before. The chestnut-haired man was used to the mass junk mail, or formal bills, or sometimes the fancy invitations that Quatre sent out for his parties, even though he always told Duo about the gatherings during one of their numerous calls through the week.

Shrugging his shoulders, Duo quickly slit open the envelope. Inside was nothing more than a small, folded piece of paper, its color faded like the envelope to show a bit of age. He unfolded the letter, violet eyes scanning over the words written in blue ink -- handwritten and not typed, more strangeness -- then froze in shock.

And suddenly the world tilted and jerked and all the color seemed to drain away from his sight. Duo blinked his eyes, then realized with a start that he had somehow ended up on the floor, his legs too weak to support him. Odin whined and scooted closer, confused over his master's actions. Duo himself just remained sitting on the floor, having to lean back against the kitchen counter to keep himself upright. His gaze drifted out, unseeingly, finally stopping at the back window, where the sky was painted in the deep gorgeous reds and oranges of sunset.

This was impossible... this couldn't be happening... this was some sort of sick joke... the litany made its way through Duo's shell-shocked mind, which was a stormy and tumultuous mess. But there was no doubt... there was no way... Duo recognized the handwriting on that letter.

"Goddamit! It can't be true!" Duo pleaded to the sky, which was taking on the deepening blue colors of twilight. He looked back down at the letter, nearly crushed in his grip, but for some reason, he could not seem to make sense of the words.

Dear Duo,

You must be wondering why you've gotten this...

you're not telling me this is how you plan to leave it, right?

and while you haven't seen the movie, I haven't even read a blurb in the newspaper about it... >_> *reluctant to surf the internet for information, so as to not spoil anything*

<_< it's depressing, alright... but you wouldn't cry just from describing a depressing introduction, right? *pokeprod* it's about death, right? death and dying, and old, yellowed paper... and I bet it was in the last will that the letter should be sent away, and omgTT__TT *sniffles*

... this is all I have written. I don't know if I want to continue the fic, though Mikke says I should. I suppose I'm a terrible tease be putting this out and having a cliffhanger, too, huh?

As for the internet, hell, I just tried to google the movie and it took me forever to find anything that wasn't written in Thai. It's going to be hard for many people to be spoiled that way. ^^;

And yes, it's depressing. Very. The newspaper reviews were telling people to bring a box of tissues -- or better, a towel -- into the theatre with them. But it's also romantic. In a very depressing way.

I probably shouldn't read this, should I? I still cry just thinking about Recorded Reminders for more than a few minutes. *sniffle*

I forgot about that fic. ^^; If you don't mind a weepfest, then you can continue to read. It's very romantic though...?

yes?? and?? what happened then?? hehe. what a way to leave us! i really liked the way you introduced us to Duo and Odin. I liked the feel of it, the regular day feel of it and how a little letter kinda made everything off kilter. I mean there were hints throughout, which also grabbed my attention, but the beginning of that letter is just the thing to make me wanna read more. please??

thank you for sharing.

Well, at least there's interest in this fic. ^^;

I'm glad you liked the tone of the fic. I really wanted to establish how Duo's life is now -- peaceful but a bit unsettled -- because that letter is REALLY going to screw him over.

...well, I guess I'd better find myself a bunker, because I'm going to make you keep writing this fic no matter what. ~_~

I love the description of Duo's day-to-day life... And his feelings on paper. Bet THAT'S going to change soon, bwaha.
