Is it Monday already?
Jun. 14th, 2004 05:07 pmHmmm... busy weekend. It's the beginning of my third week here in Thailand... man, I really need to get out more and see more stuff! And I need to see if I have enough money to go to the other islands and stuff, even though the weather isn't the best.
But firstly...
What's up with this rash of people e-mailing me about Sailor Moon? I checked my email and I had two people e-mailing me to comment on my site. My very old and defunct site on AOL homepages that I created when I first joined the SM fandom in 1996. One was a good e-mail, only telling me that my names for the outer senshi for dubs was off. Mind you, this is BEFORE the dubs were made and even BEFORE Mixx started translating. Of course they're WRONG. I was working off fanspeculation and rumors and I haven't updated in FOREVER.
The second e-mail though... grrrr... what the fuck is up with telling me that Michiru -- MICHIRU -- isn't a lesbian and that she's Haruka's COUSIN?! The person even said that the JAPANESE manga stated that she and Haruka were cousins. What a bitch! HELLO! I've collected the manga and have the translations and fucking hell, Takeuchi Naoko-sama has even autographed my last volume of the manga! I'd like to think that I know more than some stupid teenybopper who probably couldn't even accurately describe the true commection between Sailor Moon, Neo Queen Serenity, and Sailor Cosmos!
... I'm getting ranty. And fannishly obsessive.
>_>;;
ANYWAY, I ignored the girl's e-mail, but now I'm trying to decide whether I should write her back and tell her just how wrong she is. That seems rude though.

Michiru is so gay. And so is Haruka. They're very gay together. We can even add Setsuna and they would be a nice threesome. And Hotaru and Chibi Usa... they're so cute together, too. *grumps*
*coughcough*
Anyway... because I should let everyone live vicariously through me...

FRIDAY:
Friday is no school day. Whee. I hadn't really planned on doing much except getting my laundry done after a late breakfast, which I did by carting the first load off tot he nearyby laundry place by the hotel that everyone seems to be using. They wash, dry, and even iron. Bwahahahaha. That load wasn't going to be done until 5pm, and I figured I would bring the second load at that time, to make sure the wash job was good. Of course, it was barely past 10:30 am, so I had a whole afternoon to occupy.
Which I did.
... by scoping out the pool.
XD
I was only out at the pool for about an hour and a half, but I started to tan. I was the only person there (yay, no shame in being seen in my swimsuit!) and the warm weather and sun was very nice after a refreshing dip in the pool. :3
My lounging about done with, I decided to go to the Emporium again for a quick looksee and lunch and to see if I could catch Harry Potter. After dropping by Kinokuniya (whoo!) and buying a shopping map of Bangkok ( ^^;; ), I was just in time for the 1:45pm show. XD XD XD
OMFG I loved it. I can see how there would be complaints, and I'm not going to get spoilery or anything, but I enjoyed the movie. And... Daniel Radcliffe... *___* He'll be legal in a few years. Bwahahah.
So, after the movie was late lunch/early dinner at Sumo, which is one of the Japanese places in Emporium to eat. I really like their katsu. ^^ I hopped back to the hotel before going out to fetch my laundry (with the other load to be washed), only to realize I left the little claim ticket back in my room. >_<;; Anyway, I got the second load through, to be picked up at 9. I can't quite remember what I did for that time period, but I think it involved a specil on the BBC and more Chinese MTV. :P
Then I picked up my laundry -- very hard to carry two heavy bags of clothes when you're carrying an umbrella. But I was in the hotel just in time, as it really started to pour after that.
SATURDAY:
I had met Samira, Amy (Zhu), JT, and the other Amy at breakfast Friday morning and we had all had similar ideas about visiting the Teak Mansion and going to the Dusit Zoo. So we did, except we could find JT. ^^; He was probably out getting drunk again.
TEAK MANSION -- VERY cool place. It was moved to the Dusit royal grounds by King Rama V, who is the King of Siam from "The King and I." He had it built as a residence for himself, his queen(s), his children and his concubines. XD I guess that's why the inside of the mansion has different colored wings/apartments, so that he could keep everyone apart. Anyway, there's a special tour that goes through the mansion, but we weren't allowed to take pictures of the inside, and had to take our shoes off. But it was SO worth it! The tour was very informative and fun and all the stuff in the mansion... it really IS a museum. The king had four wives and 78 children. XD XD XD Amy asked whether the king had the wives at the same time, but the guide said it was one at a time.
Person: Wow... they must have died young then.
Person 2: ... if you had 78 kids, you would die, too.
*giggles*
Anyway, I'm still reeling over the fact that Rama V peed into Waterford crystal. You heard me right. We visited the King's apartments at the top of the mansion and looked at his private bathroom, and he had a chamberpot made of Waterford crystal.
... <i>damn.</i>
Once the tour was over, we were JUST in time to see the traditional Thai dancing show. I shall be proud to say that my favorite part was the beginning, when I got to see two guys showing us Thai swordfighting. X3 I kept thinking it was like X. I have pictures!
After the Teak Mansion we went to the zoo.
DUSIT ZOO --
Let me start out by saying that it was very hot and humid and it was the afternoon (about 3 pm) when we got tot he zoo. That in mind, I was sweating something awful and was pretty overheated, since we walked from the Mansion to the Zoo. They're close to each other, but... Thai blocks are very very long... and dirty... and I think we went past the back of the zoo, so not very fragrant either.
Well, the first thing we did was get something to eat from the food place, since we were starved and thirsty. I was most disappointed by the facilities, and my lunch consisted of an almond/chocolate ice cream bar. Not to be snobbish or anything, but I'm a bit picky about what exactly I ingest, as it will most likely make me sick. And I didn't really recognize anything they were offering. ^^; The only Thai food I've had so far has been from a restaurant, and the stuff at the zoo was like street stall food, which I instinctively distrust (and my mom threatened me and warned me not to eat from street stalls. I know I'm missing out, but I also don't want to rot my gut the way Zhu is doing).
... it was a DAMN GOOD ice cream bar though. I need to buy more.
After getting our energy back, we looked at birds (right next to the food eatery place), then trekked past the primates (don't think they were monkeys...) to the lake thing the zoo had.
PADDLEBOATS!!!
I got into a paddleboat with Samira and the two Amys went together and we had lots of fun. The lake was pretty big and I saw so many swimming lizards and turtles that I was amazed. Samira and I also went to the park of the lake that goes past the zoo parts, so we got to look in the cages of some of the animals as paddled along. Oh... and it was pretty cool out on the water, as it was starting to sprinkle. Fresh, cool air! YAY!
After the paddleboats, we wandered around. It was getting near closing time for the zoo (6 pm... not many people about either) and I guess they put most of the cool animals away and out of the viewing areas. I snapped pictures of the hippos for Aoi-chan, and tried to get the lions, but I think I was too far away for decent pics. They were very small lions. T_T I guess I should remember that not every zoo (especially in Asia) is like the San Diego Wild Animal Park. But, I DID get to see a male peacock strutting his stuff for a female. :3 I'm happy I managed to get pictures of his spread.
So, that was the zoo.
SWIMMING:
Since it was very hot still, we decided to do some night swimming at the hotel pool, since it didn't close until 9pm. XD Me and Amy had dinner at the KFC in the Emporium, while Samira and Zhu went someplace else. Then we met for some night swimming.
VERY VERY NICE!
The weather was humid and warm and the cool pool was perfect for the long day. Plus... night means less ability for people to see me in my swimsuit. XD The cool part was that while we were out there, it started to rain! But we stayed swimming. I'd never swam in the rain, or at night, before, so I think this was a good experience. I'm very happy. I went to bed quite content.
SUNDAY:
WEEKEND MARKET -- OMFGBIG.
Me, Samira and Zhu met at breakfast to go to the Weekend Market. It's really one of those "must see" things to do in Bangkok. The other Amy didn't go with us, because she wanted to go to a concert thing. But it was okay. ^^ The market runs from 6am to 6 pm and we got there at about 9 am. Thank goodness we did, too. It was just before the real heat of the afternoon and the weather was still humid and uncomfortable.
There were TONS of people packed around, bargaining and looking, etc etc etc. I really put my bargaining skills to good use. The first stall we seriously attacked had jewelry, and I got some nice things (mostly sets for friends) at wholesale prices or below, and a nice blue cat's eye ring for myself. :3 Because we shopped as a group, we were able to bully the shopboy (eee cute) into giving us more discounts. Such a good deal of successful bargaining really made us positive.
We headed in a certain direction, headed for area 7, which supposedly had a lot of art in it. Samira wanted to get some pieces (*cough*knockoffs*cough*), because we had seen Chris that moring and he told us where to go. I just wanted clothing and jewelry and silks if possible and we had to walk through the major clothing area to get to 7, so I was happy. Zhu, apparently, wanted purses and blue jewelry. *mad cackle*
I thought I was pretty vicious about haggling, but Zhu was RELENTLESS. She haggled every baht until it nearly screamed. It's very amusing to watch. ^^; I strictly follow the rules of bargaining:
1) Ask for the price of a thing
2) Ask if that's the "best price"
3) Start your offer at half the best price
4) Get a feel for the seller's prices and up your offer accordingly to mutual satisfaction, but don't be bullied or budge over the most you want to spend for the item
5) Never, EVER, start bargaining unless you're planning to buy
I snagged a really nice Wufei-esque jacket thing, and a shirt for myself, and then we hit the "artifacts" area.
... aka: Really Old Stuff -- Or Is It?
I have to admit, some of the stuff WAS actually old, like pottery and Buddha things and statues and the like. I saw an... interesting set of pornographic perfume bottle things and was tempted to buy them. Think the Kama Sutra, but Asian, and painted on little bottles. *giggles* I bought this cool... hanging coin thing, and each of the coins is a different Chinese Zodiac sign. I thought of Furuba and was weak to resist. ^^; I haggled the guy down though and am Quite Pleased. There was also the jade rabbit good luck charms, of which I bought a handful, one of which goes to <lj site="livejournal.com" user="iniq">.
There's also a cool tray set thing that I was contemplating buying. I'll have to go back to the weekend market again, since we only saw about HALF of it, and I want to buy that tray set. Samira and Zhu both made deals too, sometimes asking for my help in haggling if they didn't think they would get a good deal. I felt quite proud.
We had a break for lunch around 12:30, at this lovely place that had terrific smoothie/Icee-like things (I had 2 orange ones). I dearly needed it, and their french fries and chicken wings were delicious, too. *munchmunch* We needed the energy, since the day was getting hotter and it was getting more crowded. At the cafe place, I asked a waitress and showed her my map of the market. ^^;; That's how we found out that we had hit section 7.
We couldn't find the exact art type place that Chris had talked about, though there was more wandering around aimlessly and just... absorbing everything in. We DID run into the animals/pets section though, but opted to detour it, as we didn't want to see the poor animals that were there. By the time we left after 3pm, I was dizzy from everything. And it was sprinkling again. XD
Once I got back to the hotel, I crashed hard.
</lj-cut>
And that was my weekend. *^^*
There's a trip to the International Trade Court or something on Wednesday morning and I have to wear a suit. Ick. Wednesday is when the tailor lady is supposed to come and make up more clothes!!! T____T I hope we get back in time and don't miss her. I want nice shirts and blouses... and maybe more suits, too. Heheheh.
