This damn bunny just wouldn't leave me alone. I don't know how long it'll be, but I know how it'll end up. But... what happens in it is pretty much like me begging to be lynched by the Cult of 1x2x1.

*sighs*

I suppose I go to my death with this one.

The spoon clinked quietly against the porcelain cup as Heero stirred cream into his dark coffee. Once the beverage had lightened to his favor, he stopped stirring, set the spoong carefully on the small plate and lifted the drink to his lips. Perfect, of course.

"I don't know why you're worrying, Quatre."

The blond man in a carefully pressed business suit looked over the rim of his own cup with a neutral expression. "I make it a habit to worry, especially about friends who have disappeared."

Heero snorted, reaching for his croissant. "Both of us know that he can take care of himself. He doesn't need anyone following around after him. If he 'disappeared' it's for a reason."

"Are you so sure about that, Heero? Are you willing to take that risk?"

Putting down the untouched pastry, Heero frowned at his longtime friend. "Don't tell me you think this is about the divorce." Quatre just shrugged elegantly and Heero felt his temper spike. "Quatre, it's been five years. I'd like to think that we're all adults now. You know as well as I do that both of us agreed that it just wasn't working out. There's no hard feelings."

The table settings were jostled as Quatre set down his cup abruptly, dark coffee splashing over the rim and staining the white tablecloth. "Even so, I thought you'd at least be worried as a friend would be when Duo stopped contacting us three months ago!"

Heero sighed. He had been worried. Even after their divorce had been made final, Duo always kept in touch, though at a suitable and definitely warranted distance. And even cutting Heero out of the loop wouldn't mean Quatre -- Duo's best friend -- would be cut out as well.

But it still didn't mean Duo's disappearance had anything to do with the divorce. God, that had been stupid of them. Still running on the high from taking down Dekim Barton and Mariemaia's army, Heero and Duo had found their wartime relationship sparking up again. Full of hope and not a little desperation, they had gotten married after the New Year, thinking that the best way to enter the peace would be together. And what a fuck up that was. They'd only stayed together for two years, and during that time there were so many arguments and fights that it was a wonder the two of them had ever gotten together int he first place.

Heero had come to the realization that without the ever-present threat of war, their relationship wasn't much more than hormones and overactive libidos. He'd wanted more... had thought he could find it in Duo... but he'd been wrong. So very wrong. It had all blown up in their faces during a particularly nasty fight. Heero had been so angry that he'd lashed out, punching Duo across the face. The braided boy had been shocked for a moment before he slugged Heero back, giving him a black eye to match his own.

They'd filed for a divorce the next day.

Now it was five years later. Heero was twenty-four years old and he thought he was rather content with his life. He'd joined the Preventers after Mariemaia -- the one relationship that DIDN'T fall apart -- and had finally settled into the peacetime life. Sure, not having someone to go home to was lonely, but he didn't really need anyone. He had friends and work associates. And maybe he'd find someone he could love. Maybe.

"You know that Duo quit the Preventers, right?"

Heero snapped out of his memories and focused on Quatre again. "Yes, right before he went 'missing,' which I still think is stupid. He's probably just traveling or wandering around, whatever he called it."

"You mean wanderlust?"

Heero nodded shortly.

There was an uncertain look in Quatre's marine blue eyes and he opened his mouth to say something, but was cut off by a sharp ringtone. Both men fumbled in their pockets for the phones, and Heero waved at Quatre.

"It's me."

Quatre nodded and started sipping his coffee again.

Heero frowned at the unknown phone number for a second before he placed the phone to his ear. "Hello?"

"Yes, hello," a woman's voice came over the line. "May I speak with Mr. Heero Maxwell-Yuy?"

The Japanese man frowned at the use of his married name. His former married name. "Heero Yuy."

"Pardon?"

"I just go by Heero Yuy now."

"Oh!" the woman said, sounding flustered. "I'm very sorry. This was the name on the contact information."

"Contact information?"

"Yes, I'm calling on behalf of the Angels of Mercy hospital. I wanted to inform you that your husband, Duo Maxwell-Yuy, was recently placed under our care."

Time stopped.

"What?"

"I'm calling to inform you that he's here at the hospital. His condition is stable, but we're going to need someone to fill out the paperwork."

"Condition?" Heero repeated in shock. Quatre looked up worriedly and Heero just waved him away. "What condition? I don't know what you're talking about."

There was a distressed noise from the other end of the line. "I'm terribly sorry, sir! I thought that you had been contacted before this!"

"No, I wasn't. Now can you just tell me what happened?"

"I'm sorry... Mr. Maxwell-Yuy was shot."

Heh... it looks like I will be continuing this. Eventually. *coughs*

And yeah, I like the idea of a not totally happy future. I mean, the 17 year olds I know are flipping idiots. Even if the GBoys are more mature... I still don't think they should get married that young. ^^;;

Hrm...nothing that warrants a lynching yet. But I do want to know what happens.

*is poked*

Gah! I thought giving Heero and Duo a horrible marriage that ended with divorce would warrant a lynching for sure. :P

And I'm glad you want to know what happens. That's sort of the point. ^^;
