So, yesterday evening I actually got to witness a group of protesters (maybe three dozen or so) marching down Market Street. What I thought was interesting was that right behind the protesters was this group (maybe a dozen) of cops in riot gear. The numbers of protesters is going down now, but I suppose it will get worse since Critical Mass has decided to join in.

Whoo... I'm damn glad I take public transportation.

Yup, helmets with face shields, body armor, the works. They trailed right after the marching protesters, too.

Isn't there some sort of way that's out of line? Threatening, harrassing, or something? I dunno, it just seems like overkill...

No, I don't think so. Despite the riot gear, the police were outnumbered at least 2 to 1. Also, the cops followed a respectful distance behind and didn't engage anything. The only thing that happened was the group stopped on a corner and chanted, and the cops immediately took up positions blocking the storefronts (but still behind) them.

And considering the number of arrests that have been made already, I think the SFPD has reason to be worried.
