For some reason, I'm looking for Fushigi Yuugi alternative pairing fics. *winces* I haven't been in the FY fandom since '98, at least. Also, because I'm looking for alternative pairing fics (that means someone BESIDES Tamahome/Taka with Miaka) I keep running into something that made me sick and tired of seeing in the Sailor Moon fandom.
Random bastardization.
*sweatdrop*
The problem with "true love pairings" (i.e. Tamahome/Miaka and Mamoru/Usagi) is that if you want to do an alternate pairing, you have to break the couple up first. *sigh* Unfortunately, the easiest way to do this is to either:
A) Kill off said character that you don't want around, or
B) Horribly BASTARDIZE said character that you don't want around so it's OBVIOUS that the other person (usually the girl) is better off with someone else.
Sorry... no, thanks. I had my fill of that in SM. Considering that I am a staunch supporter of Mamoru/Tuxedo Kamen (wai, Endymion-nii-sama!), I hated how ANYONE who wanted to pair Usagi with someone else had to horribly TWIST Mamoru's character. Even in normal fics, he's portrayed in a Not So Nice Light. That's one of the things that drove me out of the fandom (massive writer's block notwithstanding).
Now, since I'm looking for alternative pairing FY fics, I'm running into the same problem. See, I like Miaka. I like Tamahome/Taka. It is Quite Obvious that they were Meant To Be Together, despite the fact that Miaka had other droolworthy guys throwing themselves at her. Yay for True Love! Yay!
Of course, I also ADORE alternate pairing fics. Heh... I don't like staying in the status quo... besides, the same thing over and over gets stale after a while. So I like to see Miaka with other guys... in particular, Tasuki/Miaka and Hotohori/Miaka (I have another rant/observations about the way the Suzaku Seishi love their Miko, but I'll do that some other time and possibly not here).
Anyway, now I'm being bombarded by bastard!Taka fics. Mamoru all over again. *sigh* I don't know why they can't just have Taka and Miaka drift apart, or realize they don't love each other, or something more realistic. Why do authors insist on bastardizing good characters? I know there's a lot to be said about artistic expression and creative license, but still... Is it simply because bastardization is the easiest way to "fix" the relationship problem and give you a potential "bad guy" on the path of new love?
Okay, killing off Taka outright is the best way to get rid of the relationship problem. But I'm not talking about that.
I dunno, I guess I'm just getting upset over an inconsequential thing.
*sighs*
Now I have to hunt for more fics.

Date: 2003-01-11 12:06 pm (UTC)It's hard, and nobody wants to do it, but it happens to almost everyone at some point in their lives. People wish that things were simpler, more clear-cut. They would much prefer to live in a world where there was a clearly defined good guy and bad guy, so that there could be no doubt about who carried the blame for the relationship going sour. It's a way to end a bad relationship without carrying guilt -- by making your ex into such a demon that everyone will take your side.
That's the kind of wishful thinking people project into their make-believe relationships -- not only the idea of an ideal relationship, where nothing goes wrong, but also the ideal break-up, where there's no guilt or blame attached.
