Somewhere, deep in the bowels of Castle Anthrax, life stirred. If it could legitmately be *called* life. A small pack of crackbunnies hopped their way down the polished metal corridors, idly chewing their way through wires as they went. For the moment, THEY were the ones on the top of the food chain. In the distance, the sound of a scream echoed through the halls. With unspoken agreement, the crackbunnies all hopped down the long hallway and around a corner, inexlicably drawn to the sounds of fighting.

Once the bunnies had passed by, a grate fell from an air duct, clanging to the ground. A chestnut-haired head popped out, upside down, meter-long braid dangling.

"All clear," Duo said. He dropped out of the duct, flipping to land on his feet heavily. He looked up at the darkness of the duct. "Drop it down."

A large duffle bag was pushed from the air duct and Duo caught it. Then Heero emerged, landing on the floor with a thud. He ran a hand through his dark brown hair, getting the dust out of it.

"Set it up," he snapped out, unzipping the duffle bag and shoving some strange circular objects into Duo's hands. As the braided boy scrambled, slapping the devices to the ends of the hallway, Heero accessed one of the wall computers.

The four objects firmly attached high up, on either end of the long hallway, and on opposite walls, Duo gave a thumbs up. "Clear."

"Stand back."

Duo did and Heero quickly punched in a command. The four circular discs glowed for a brief moment before an energy field sprang up between them in pairs, blocking off the stretch of hallway. The braided boy frowned at the energy fields, reached into his boot and pulled out a knife. He threw it at the glowing purple energy. On contact, the wall emitted a loud buzz and the knife disintegrated.

"Yes!" Duo cheered. "It works!"

Heero nodded. "This should help us in containing the bunnies. But it hasn't been tested. There's a chance that repetative strikes will eventually weaken, then cause the energy barriers to collapse."

Duo sighed. "Well, it's better than nothing, ne? All we need to do is block off enough corridors to herd the bunnies to the Main Commons. Then we can whack them all from there. Uhh... Heero? Does this thing work on Muses?"

"I designed them to repeal any attack. Bunny or Muses, anything that touches the field gets fried."

The American made a face. "Oh, ick. Remind me not to smack into one of those then. I don't think being disintegrated would be fun."

Heero was still rapidly tapping at the wall computer. "Dammit..."

Duo frowned, looking over Heero's shoulder. "Shit, Heero... they took the Misc. Anime Wing?"

The Japanese boy frowned. "Yes... from what I can tell... they're going to strike at the OC Wing and the--" Heero's words were choked off and he stared at the screen. "NO!"

"Heero?!" Duo exclaimed, about to push Heero out of the way to see what was wrong. He didn't have to go to such extremes because the warning klaxons in the Castle went off and the PA System blared to life.

"... took the Wing... no chance... hurt..." Duo belatedly realized that it was Sayoran's voice coming through the speakers. "... headed for... C Wing... can't... AAHHHH!!!... RAI GEKI!!! ...SAKURA!!! SAKURA!!!..."

The PA dissolved into a hiss of static before the sound went out totally. Duo stared at Heero, who was standing stock still in the middle of the hallway, fists clenched until his knuckles were white.

"Heero..." the violet-eyed boy murmured, one hand hesitantly touching his lover's shoulder. Heero flinched at the touch, then raised one hand to entwine his fingers with Duo's. "It'll be okay... I'm sure they're alright... your mom and dad... they're tough, and the D&D Field will fix 'em up right and we don't even know what's going on anyway and it could just be our imaginations running away with us and we don't even KNOW what--"

"Duo." The American shut his mouth. Heero squeezed his hand briefly, finally raising his stormy blue eyes to meet Duo's worried violet. "I know."

"Go to them, Heero," Duo said. "I've got this section covered. I'm gonna head my ass over to the HP Wing and take care of stuff there. Too many non-combatants over there."

The Japanese boy's shoulders straightened, accepting his mission. "Ryoukai. I think they'll be heading to the OC Wing. Non-coms there, too. Watch yourself."

Duo grinned, leaning forward to steal a small kiss. "Don't worry about me, buddy! Just make sure your mom and dad are okay... Sakura makes the best damn croquettes I've ever had."

Heero nodded, then he helped to boost Duo back into the air ducts, he tossed up the duffle bag, and then jumped up to catch Duo's hand and pull himself up as well. In the darkness of the air duct, the two parted ways, not knowing when they would meet up again.
