She watched everything as it shattered like glass all around her.

Because glass was clear and strong. It kept out the winds and rains and rough weather. It let the shining sun stream through marble floors and let you glimpse the land outside without stepping on foot into it. But glass was fragile, too. Too much wind, a too harsh storm could break everything that was beautiful and let the raging elements destroy the peace that you tried so carefully to maintain.

And she watched. It was what she did.

Cassandra wasn't a fool. She preferred to stay out of fights and arguments as much as possible. She chalked it up to being too damn pragmatic for her own good. It was too easy for her to see things from every perspective. It was useless for her to argue when she could easily be defenind the other side. It was her gift. She considered it a curse. Especially at times like these.

Eliza and Suzanna were nearly at each others throats, their words dripping venom with each syllable. 'Toria was fuming not so quietly in a corner of the room, letting her words rip into Eliza and Suzanna at random, projecting her anger in whichever direction it took at the moment. And Cassandra watched, perched on the bed, knees drawn up to her chest as she watched the argument rage through wide eyes. Cassandra wanted to cry. No, she wanted to be angry. Because, like everything, the relationship between this group of friends was like glass too. And it was being tested now. She could see, in her mind's eye, the fragile spiderwebs of stress and pressure building through it's surface.

What had caused the argument this time? First, it had been a problem of communication between the friends. The lack of mutual communication was due to the varying scehdules that each of the girls had. That, and the fact that they had a tendency to talk about each other behind each other's backs. No... not really. More like they asked for comfort and advice from each other on how to deal with everyone else. They were a motley group indeed... their personalities clashed in so many different ways that it was sometimes amazing that the four of them ever remained on friendly terms with one another.

Then what happened next? Cassandra thought back to not-so-long-ago... it had been a forgotten date. A rush of hurt emotions. Eliza lashing out at everyone to share her grief, anger, and dissappointment. And then Suzanna's temper had broken and the girl had lashed out against Eliza, sneering and throwing accusations out. 'Toria had jumped into the fray next, scathingly reminding Eliza of her own good wishes that were casually forgotten. Of course, Eliza had defended herself, but refused to let go of her own anger.

Well... 'Toria *had* wanted all of them to communicate more. But this wasn't how Cassandra had thought it would go. She had her own fears, had seen something like this building through her pleasant enclosure of glass. But what could she have done? How did you stop the storm from breaking the glass?

In some ways, Cassandra felt like the most displaced amongst the group. She was so engrossed in her studies while the other three led fairly normal lives. She was as much at fault for not communicating as the others, but she had no answer on how to fix anything. The other three seemed so close to each other. Like sisters. Cassandra could feel her own share of bitterness and longing for closeness. It warred with her own need for privacy and aloneness. Cassandra was at home in her lonliness, wrapped it around her like a blanket. But sometimes, she wanted to share that blanket with others. But it wasn't her nature to... not naturally at least.

But now, with the glass breaking and the tensions high, Cassandra fumed in her blanket, clutching it around her shoulder. She couldn't keep her tongue any longer.

She wouldn't.

Because sometimes, the hardest thing to do, was to watch the glass shatter around you.
