Just some snippets from two fics I really need to finish, since they are supposed to be Xmas presents. >_>;;
"Riku, don't you dare kick that puppy!"
With a speed born from righteous indignation and a love of fluffy small animals, Sora dashed forward, throwing himself between his best friend and the small growling lump of fur. Riku looked utterly annoyed and mildly insulted, his green eyes narrowed in a glare at the (still) growling lump.
"I wasn't actually gonna kick it," Riku ground out in explanation, when Sora had decided that his glare meant kicking, and had tried to drag him away. He pulled his arm free with a scowl. "I was trying to make it go away. It's that stray that's been knocking over the trash cans and digging in yards all week."
Sora frowned, giving the lump of fur -- he decided it was a little too big to properly be a puppy, but way too small to be an adult dog -- an apraising look. This certainly didn't look like some horrible hellbeast bent on destroying everyone's property. Sure, the puppy was dirty and kinda stinky, but he really didn't think it could do that much damage. Unfortunately, Riku caught the look on Sora's face and snorted.
"Don't be fooled. I saw it last night when it tipped over our trashcan. Dad yelled at me like it was my fault some stray got into the yard. Do you know how annoying it is to have to clean up trash at midnight?"
"He's probably just hungry then," Sora replied, still looking at the puppy, which had ceased its growling and was now huddling behind one of the well-manicured bushes in Riku's front yard. "Look at him! I bet no one even takes care of him or feeds him, so you can't blame him for trying to--"
And Sora was interrupted by Riku's curse and his dash forward.
"IT'S TAKING A DUMP ON OUR LAWN!"
"NO, RIKU, DON'T KICK HIM!"
In the ensuing scuffle, the puppy had disappeared through a hole in the fence. But it still managed to leave behind a present.
-----------------------------------------------------------
It's a few days later before Sora manages to catch a glimpse of the puppy again. He knows it's still running free, because Riku hasn't stopped complaining. Apparently, Riku's yard and trashcans were prime choices for the puppy's midnight raids. It's gotten to the point where Riku has taken to staying up late to catch the puppy in the act, but never manages to.
"It's freaking possessed!" Riku declares, scrubbing his hands clean after filling yet another hole in the lawn. "I was up until 3AM waiting for that little bastard, I left for like, 5 minutes to take a piss, and when I came back, it had already tipped over the trashcans again!"
Sora just hands Riku a towel and a glass of lemonade from his mom. "You shouldn't call the puppy an 'it', Riku. The puppy is a boy."
"And I only know that because it's been marking every bush in our yard! I swear, when I get my hands on that stupid thing I'll--"
"You're not allowed to kick him!"
Everything after that dissolved into a squabble about what Riku was and was not allowed to do to the puppy, until Sora's mother called him to go to the grocery store and Riku disappeared to call the animal control people. It made Sora feel a little sad; afterall, it wasn't the puppy's fault that he didn't have a home and no one to take care of him. Maybe he shouldn't be so destructive either, but no one had probably taught the puppy any manners either. So Sora made his way to the grocery store to pick up a bag of things for his mother, and wondered if there was anything he could do. But he'd never seen the puppy around his house -- was his lawn and trashcan deficient in some way? -- and couldn't figure out a plan to catch a stray puppy.
On the way home, bag of groceries tucked in one arm, Sora heard the distinct sound of a growl. He stopped on the sidewalk, peering into a narrow alley between the buildings. He could faintly see eyes glowing in the darkness and shuffled forward, which only made the eyes duck behind a trashcan and the growling increase.
"Hey there... I'm not gonna hurt you..." Sora said in this gentlest voice, crouching down so he didn't seem too scary to the puppy. The eyes peeked out from behind the trashcan again and Sora smiled, but holding out his hand only made the puppy skittishly hide again. Sora wasn't dumb enough to try and make a grab for the puppy; it was a stray afterall, and it might have a disease. Flailing a bit, Sora dug into the grocery bag and dug out a package of lunchmeat that was supposed to go into his sandwiches for school. He pulled open the plastic package and carefully set it on the ground, giving it a little nudge towards the puppy.
"You poor thing," Sora murmured as he watched the puppy slink into view, clearly unwilling to come closer, even if the food was practically right in front of it. He was half-grown and skinny, his fuzzy puppy coat already starting to turn into an adult dog's coat in a few spots. "No one ever showed you love, huh? That's sad. You shouldn't dig up peoples' yard and stuff. Riku's really getting angry about that. But I guess you can't help it, right?"
Sora stood up carefully, pulling the grocery bag with him and taking a step backwards, and wasn't surprised to see the puppy duck into hiding again.
"That's for you, okay? I know it's not much, but I'll try to think of something better later."
Sora left the alley slowly, but couldn't help the smile on his face as he heard the puppy begin tearing into the food behind him. Maybe he could figure out something to do to help afterall.
---------------------------------------------------
"I can't believe you gave that thing your food, Sora," Riku said with a disgusted tone the next day.
Sora just gave his best friend a little glare, slamming the door of his locker shut. "And just what was I supposed to do, Riku? He's practically starving to death, and he's just a puppy. It isn't fair. And he didn't knock over your trashcan last night, did he? You should be thanking me."
Riku just sighed, standing up from his leaning position against the lockers and adjusting the strap of his gym bag over his shoulder. He gave Sora a little half-smile and ruffled one hand through Sora's spiky hair even as the shorter boy tried to bat his hand away. "You're too nice, Sora. You can't save every puppy on the Island."
"But I think I wanna try and save this one," Sora returned, but was glad Riku wasn't actually angry with him. "So are we walking home together today? Kairi's got a club meeting."
"Sorry, Sora, but I've got an emergency blitzball practice," Riku wrinkled his nose. "One of the seniors busted his arm in an accident so I've gotta substitute in the next game. But I'll try and come over after, okay?"
"Okay!" Sora chirped. "You can help me with my math homework."
"Oh, so that's the only reason you want me around, for my brains. I'm so distressed, I thought it was for my sexy body."
"Well, it's certainly not for your big head!" With a laugh, Sora gave Riku a push. "Go on before I have to pop you with a pin!"
Riku just laughed, giving a little wave before disappearing down the hallway. Gathering up his own bag, Sora decided to make his own way home. Usually, with either Riku or Kairi or both, they would make a detour through the square for ice cream or sweets before separating to go home, but there wasn't a point today. He trudged home quietly, mind filled with all the homework he had to do, and what was for dinner, and if Riku would be able to come over and maybe stay the night, and was so distracted that he didn't notice when he slammed headlong into something. Or rather, someone.
Startled by falling back onto his ass, Sora looked the (long) way up to see the features of the school's resident bully.
"Well, look what we have here," Palmer said, a nasty smirk on his face. "I think you need to apologize to me, twerp."
Sora hurried to pick himself up off the ground, looking around for help that didn't exist. Sora wasn't very good at intimidation -- far too short and slim to be threatening -- and he really only caused damage when he had a wooden sword in his hand. Unfortunately, he didn't think Palmer would let him run to the Play Island to get his sword and make the fight fair.
"Look, I don't want to fight..." Sora began hesitantly, only to be cut off by Palmer's laugh.
"I don't want a fight either. So you give me all your money and I'll let you go without having to beat you up."
"But I don't have any!"
"Then I guess we do this the hard way," Palmer replied, punching one meaty fist into the opposite hand. Then he drew back, and Sora cringed down, throwing his arms up to shield his head before the blow landed.
Instead, there was a vicious sounding snarl and Palmer started screaming. One blue eye popping open, Sora looked up, only to be met with the sight of Palmer screaming and crying, his leg running red with blood and pants ripped to shreds below the knee. Sora's savior was the still-snarling dirty gray puppy Riku had complained about. Palmer's hurt twisted into something like fury, and Sora watched as he drew his leg back to kick the puppy.
"YOU SHOULD GO TO THE HOSPITAL."
Palmer froze, turning to Sora again. "What was that, twerp?"
"The hospital! For your leg!" Sora exclaimed, trying to sound helpful and non-threatening. "That stray's been around and he's got all sorts of diseases! Maybe even rabies! Riku saw him foaming at the mouth once!"
Palmer's face went deathly pale as he looked from the puppy to his still bleeding leg. "Shit! If my dad finds out he's gonna kill me!"
Without another word, Palmer limped off as fast as he could, muttering under his breath about not wanting to get shots. Sora just stood on the sidewalk and looked at the puppy, who was no longer growling, but instead licking at himself in a very self-satisfied manner.
"You saved me, puppy!" Sora said, crouching down like he had done the day before, and offering his hand for the puppy to sniff. The fact that this same puppy had just savagely attacked another person didn't even cross his mind. The puppy hunkered down, taking a cautious sniff from out of arm's reach, then just as quick as he had appeared, turned tail and ducked into another alley between the buildings.
Sora sighed to himself. Obviously, the puppy still wasn't very trusting. But Sora hoped he could change that.
-----------------------------------------------
It happened as it usually did: one moment, Sora had a sleeping puppy with his head flopped over his knee and the next, there was a naked boy sleeping with his head on Sora's knee.
Sora had never managed to actually watch his puppy transform, it was a change between heartbeats, but now he was less surprised by it. He continued to ruffle his fingers through Ri's silver hair instead of gray fur, engrossed in the book he was reading. After a few more minutes, Ri stretched and yawned in a way that was certainly more canine than human, until a slow smile crossed his pretty face.
"Sora..." he said, voice low and gravelly but still nice to listen to. Then he bent his head to nuzzle at Sora's cheeks and jaw affectionately, though Sora was quite glad that he'd stopped the licking when he was human-shaped.
At the crook of his neck, Ri suddenly froze, then began snuffling harder. Sora giggled and squirmed, trying to shove Ri away from tickling him, but the puppy-turned-boy just put his hands to good use to hold Sora in place while he sniffed. Once done with that, Ri pulled back, his green eyes sharp as they looked into Sora's.
"You've been with that other one. The one I look like," Ri said, a growl in the undercurrents of his voice.
"Eh? Ri, you know Riku is my best friend! I go to school with him -- that's why I leave the house every day -- so of course his scent would be on me."
Ri didn't look pleased at all, snuffling again. "Then why is he in rut?"
Sora's face felt like it was on fire and he was sure his cheeks were flaming red. "WHAT?!"
Another sniff. "That other one. He was in rut around you. I can smell it. He's put his scent on you. He's trying to claim you."
Sora squirmed uncomfortably, remembering how Riku had lingered close to him during gym, draping an arm around his shoulders after the showers and helping him adjust his uniform tie. But that was a normal thing for Riku to do. He'd been doing it for years.
"T-that's not possible," Sora stammered out. "Riku's a boy!"
"I know that the other one is male. That's why I said he was in rut."
"Well, I'm a boy, too!"
That made Ri pause, green eyes blinking slowly as he tilted his head to the side, inquisitive. "But you're female. And you're coming into heat."
"WHAT?!"
Ri just stretched out lazily on his belly, his body weight pinning Sora's legs down. "It comes and goes. You're not in full heat yet. The other one must smell it like I do, and wants to claim you for breeding."
Sora sputtered.
"But don't worry. I'll make you my mate first, and put my scent on you so the other one will leave you alone. Or maybe we'll fight for you."
