Yes. You're supposed to keep the little drill pointer between the mark and the end of the bar without going over, or else it wastes a drill life. Other drills go faster, or have a shorter space between the end of the bar and the mark, so it gets tricky sometimes. *pats you*
And I know the tutorial is boring, but it's helpful (or it was to me when I first started) and it's completely worth the equips you get (you should get your first Drill, Hat, Shield, Sword, 50 Blue Potions, and 50 Pink Potions). And by the time you get out of the tutorial, you should be at, or almost at, level 5. Without the Graduation Equips you get from the tutorial, you have to wait until level 10 to start using the other equips you find/but in the main game.
