The Islands did get the short end of the stick, and I really think that's part of the fun, inventing the history. And really, for how big a role Sora and Riku play in the story, we don't know anything about what they're like outside of a universal-scale battlefield. I wonder about those things pretty often, like... how would Sora treat his friends? How did he do in school? A great deal of the decisions you make about these characters come off tiny little details. Like Sora's family situation... it looks as though magic is holding that house up (judging by Sora's bedroom). Everything is patched, half of the rafters are missing, instead of moulding, there are 2x4s nailed against the ceiling. It doesn't even seem to have any kind of post and beam framework. Surely if a man lived there, this wouldn't be the case, you know? And if this is the case, then Sora's mom is too busy working to pay bills to do any kind of construction on the house. So who could fix a little kid's room? Maybe an over-eager 14 year old brother with a nail gun! And really, who does that big sack of spears and fish-hunting stuff belong to? They're longer than Sora's bed.
So yeah, I can see that. They both are quite puppy-like, after all. ^^
