I've been having these weird thoughts lately. Like is any of this for real, or not?
He didn't know what was up or what was down. He was just... drifting. That sounded like a good word. Drifting like a toy boat on the water, going wherever the wind pushed him. He thought that he should feel afraid, maybe. Or more confused. But he didn't. Instead he felt calm and at peace and at home.
He stretched out, and surprised himself when his body moved with him, and was suddenly aware of heat and light and crumbly sand beneath his toes. He didn't question it, but just sprawled out more, fingers digging into the sand and pulling up handfuls just to let it slip through his fingers again. But he wondered why he couldn't see.
"There you are, you lazy bum! Making me do all the work again."
He blinked, then squinted as the bright sun assaulted his eyes, managing to raise one hand to shade his view. Standing in front of him with one hand cocked on his hip was Riku (Riku Riku I was looking for you where did you go), looking both amused and annoyed at the same time.
His mouth moved of its own accord, words spilling past his lips, and he felt so detached but that was okay. Everything was okay. Everything was perfect and right.
"Didn't catch anything?"
Riku gave his empty net bag a scornful look, then shrugged. "The fish aren't around the reef today. Maybe the storm scared them off, so I figured I could come in for a bit. I'm not as lazy as you."
"I am NOT lazy!"
Storm, what storm? Oh yes... the big storm, a rare summer torrent but not too unusual given the tropical weather. Everything was fine, even if the fish weren't in their usual spots on the reef.
"Ha!" Riku dropped his bag on the sand and flopped beside him, kicking sand over his toes. "I bet you were hoping that I'd come back with a big catch, just so you could steal one for lunch."
"I would not steal! I'd ask. Politely, even."
Riku laughed brightly (Riku Riku it's been so long why did you do it I want you back is that your real smile), tossing his head back and his silver hair falling past his shoulders. His mouth made more words, but he didn't quite care what they were because everything was good and right and perfect and this was the way things were supposed to be. He pouted then joked then sulked and it all rolled over him like a wave, and Riku smiled and laughed and nudged his shoulder and that was all right too. Nothing was wrong.
"Okay! Okay! Stop making that face. I'll go out to the reef again later and catch some fish for sure, because you with an empty stomach is one of the scariest things on the Island!"
"Yay! I knew I could count on you, Riku!"
"But! I want my payment up front, because knowing you, you'll probably try to wiggle out of it as usual."
All of him was confused now, he was sure of it, and he hurriedly shoved his hands into his pockets looking for (munny munny need it to buy to upgrade for ultima) anything he could use in trade for the fish he wanted to eat. Riku just watched him curiously, but there was nothing of any value that he had.
"Riiiiiiiku!"
Silver hair shook back and forth, sea green eyes slightly narrowed. "No way, I said you had to pay up first."
"But I don't have anything!"
A brilliant smile. A bright smile. A beautiful smile. Had he ever seen anything that captivating before?
"You can just pay me the normal way," Riku said, leaning forward and planting one hand on the sand between them, his eyes intent.
He barely managed a soft "eh" before Riku's lips landed on his. Oh. Oh. This was different. No it wasn't. This was the way things were. It was right and it was perfect and it was good. Riku's lips kissing him breathless. Riku's hands pushing away his jacket and unzipping his overalls. Riku's body on top of his and the sand and the sun and the sound of the waves and oh, it was all so good.
If he was a boat then Riku was his dock, firm and stable, the only thing he remembered and cared about in the tumult of the waves and the winds and the dark (dark dark so dark where am I). And he clung to Riku, arms thrown around his neck, legs locked around his waist and heels digging into the small of Riku's back. Riku was panting, thrusting deeper and harder and he accepted every bit of it greedily.
"Stay here... stay here with me... Sora...!"
Sora... was that his name?
The world exploded in white light and heat and pleasure and Riku was murmuring words of love into his ear.
Ahead lies something you need -- but to claim it, you must lose something dear.
"... you're still here?"
He blinked, sea green eyes opening. With great reluctance, he straightened, removing his forehead and bare hands from the cool glass. He knew who it was and didn't turn around, instead gazing at the the person trapped in dreams. It was easy... so so easy to tangle his own fingers into those threads of memories, to weave those pleasant dreams into a paradise of his own making.
"I've protected you as long as I could, but soon, DiZ will come here... and... and Ri--"
"Don't worry, Namine," he finally said, interrupting her words and turning around after one last fond caress over the glass. "I'll be gone before they notice I survived. If they notice. I'm sure you don't want me here either, since you have the Real Thing now, to play the part of your knight."
Namine shook her head in denial, but he stopped her words of protest by placing one finger gently on her lips.
"A new life for me, and a new life for you, that's more than either of us could have wished for, right? Take care of Sora."
And he spun around again, feeling the ripples of power from the other two people left in the Castle, and hurried in the opposite direction.
"Namine, can you do one thing for me?"
"What is it?"
He gave the pale girl a look over his shoulder, his smile as sharp as blades. "Tell the Real Thing that there was something I managed to beat him to."
