R lights cig with dad's lighter; "farewell, dad," throws lighter into water; sinks symbolically into river bottom. "Oh yeah, wasn't that expensive?" --in flashback to dad's death, winter of 2002. --R has been suspended from college; drops out. everyone else thinks he should become a detective, but he has no plans to do so, and is totally directionless --first white dream/vision--little R looking at his father with a faceless crowd; looks away, dad comes over; before he can take R's hand, S&S wake R from his dream--by asking him if he'll do a detective job for them. --asks them for the first time how much sugar they want in their coffee (paper cups; before the intimicy of the smiley-mug set) --as he refuses to take the case, putting himself down, he tries to use the lighter & has trouble getting it to light --Sa says, if he can take the case, he should inheirit the business, if not, then not --long, long moment of motionless silence. "accepted." --bathhouse terrorist scene--Sara is always so bold! --Rentarou searches, reluctantly. Says he was actually itching to do something, flashing back to his father's words, "What are you going to do?" But his heart isn't it. The zippo still won't work. --He gives up. Croquette lady's admonishment rings in his ears; the radio discusses something that sounds like his exact predicament. He's depressed, and sings an old japanese children's song about rain. --notices a note left under a paper coffee cup. PIcks it up, reads it, becomes furious--trashes the apartment while asking "what's up with me? who am I?" --steals the delivery dude's bike. Lighter now lights. whoo! he can smoke again! --"sou was always like that." always thinking of someone else--money in mailbox --sara and soujyu look at the time and get bummed. Sou comforts Sa, who gets angry and says they should decide their own future. suddenly, the pouring rain stops. R makes his entrance--right into the lake. they're thrilled. "FOUND YOU!" he shouts. --he hugs them both to him. Flashforward: hugging the naked twins in his cold, dark apartment. "Things haven't changed," he says, then amends it to: "things have changed a little."
