Konoha had the marvelous ability to stay the same, no matter what changes occured. The wildly painted buildings and towers, the Leaf symbol emblazoned on walls, even down to small shops that lined the main street... through the wars and battles, Konoha endured. The familiar surroundings only served to make Sasuke even more sure of his decision to leave the village of his birth and take his tutalage under Orochimaru. What good would it be for him to stay in a place that was stagnant? That did not challenge his abilities? Konoha had held him back -- the same way it had held Orochimaru back; the same way it had held back Itachi.
Sasuke clenched his fists, jumping lightly from rooftop to rooftop. Yes, they had both left Konoha and grown to be even stronger. And, of course, why shouldn't it be the same for Sasuke? He was a genius, too. Orochimaru saw his worth and potential. And soon enough, Sasuke would be able to defeat his brother and take his revenge. Konoha would never allow him to have his justice, his vengeance. So, he was justified in leaving. Of course he was. He didn't need anything from Konoha. Nothing at all.
And yet, here he was, leaping over the familiar roofs, headed for an apartment that he knew well.
But it didn't mean anything. Orochimaru often sent him on such missions, testing his loyalty to Sound by setting Sasuke against Leaf. Usually it was just information gathering, or missions where he wouldn't seriously go against a higher level Leaf shinobi; it chafed, but Sasuke had accepted Orochimaru's explanations of not wanting to lose Sasuke so soon after his training had begun. It also made Sasuke feel somewhat proud; Orochimaru needed him, wanted to teach him new things. And so Sasuke made sure to execute his missions flawlessly, not hindered by weaklings or... teammates.
Shaking his head, Sasuke leapt lightly onto a roof with a good view of the apartment. No, nothing had changed really, the idiot still hadn't learned to put up curtains, so anyone could look into his apartment if they wanted to. He almost cursed this obsessive behavior. But, Sasuke had to admit that Naruto was strong... their fight at the Valley fo the End had only emphasized it. Sasuke still had nightmares, memories or the Chuunin Exams and seeing the blond idiot outstripping him and somehow becoming more powerful than him, when before, Naruto had been chasing after Sasuke's back. And he needed to know, needed to see for himself that Naruto had not bested him yet again. Sasuke had beat him once... he was stronger than Naruto. He was.
Sasuke crouched down in the shadows, peering into the apartment. There was Naruto, puttering around his apartment, and Sasuke was mildly amused by the evidence that the blond actually DID clean up after himself. He'd obviously not had a mission recently, since Naruto was dressed simply in black sweat pants and a garishly orange shirt -- that hadn't changed either. But then Naruto bent down to pick up something from the floor and... was that a Jounin vest? Why would Naruto have a Jounin vest? The intelligence gathered by Kabuto had said that Naruto hadn't even passed the Chuunin Exams yet. Sound's information couldn't be that far off, and if it was, Sasuke would be glad to inform Orochimaru... and be there to watch the smug medic get punished.
Then the front door swung open, and Naruto whirled around with his arms full of clothing, and Sasuke leaned forward to see who the visitor was. Who would have the key? Perhaps the chuunin teacher, Iruka? Sasuke heard Naruto's joyful whoop, saw the clothes tumble to the floor again, and then was stunned into silence as Naruto rushed forward to throw his arms around the shoulders of Hyuuga Neji.
"Neji!" Sasuke read Naruto's lips. "You're back from your mission early!"
The Hyuuga gave Naruto a small smile, freeing himself from Naruto's grasp only long enough to remove his sandals and long white jacket. And then there was Naruto again, shooting off questions at a mile a minute as he tugged Neji to the couch.
"Are you hungry? I came back from a mission this morning and haven't had time to buy anything from the grocery, that Old Hag wants me on guard duty for the rest of the week because of the negotiations, can you believe that? Me? Guard duty?! And it's all just a bunch of blowhards anyway, since everyone knows the treaty won't be broken by --"
Sasuke's eyes shifted from reading Naruto's lips to watching his hands. They cut through the air to emphasize his words, waving here and there, and frequently moving to touch Neji -- his arm, his knee, to tug a long lock of dark hair. The Uchiha wondered why the other boy allowed such liberties, when he saw the Hyuuga raise his own pale hand to lay it over Naruto's mouth. Naruto's blue eyes went wide over the palm that muffled him.
"Naruto."
When had the Hyuuga become close enough to Naruto to use his name like that?
Blue eyes crinkled up into a familiar mischevious expression. A dark brow arched over milky eyes.
"You know that using your tongue like that doesn't do anything. I'm too used to it."
Naruto was saying something from behind the Hyuuga's hand, and it frustrated Sasuke that he didn't know WHAT. But the answer seemed to amuse the older boy, and he removed his hand. "Fine. Then show me what else your tongue can do."
And when Naruto eagerly pounced, pinning the other boy against the couch cushions and slanting his mouth over Neji's, a part of Sasuke wondered if maybe Konoha had changed more than he had thought.
