Good question.

Although--they were allied again before Gaara became Kazekage, right? That whole backing-down-and-saving-face thing when they claimed they were set up by Orochimaru. I think they wouldn't actually resume hostilities without a reason, although the reason could be something as simple as "We think we can win this time."

I think it was the extra symbolism that I read into that whole scene. I mean, Gaara was looking at his left hand, and just a few chapters ago, what happened? Naruto's genjutsu had Gaara being a part of him by being his left hand. God, that made the GaaNaru shipper in me squeal with joy and then start crying.

Hmmm... Gaara is Kazekage, yes, but I assume their political structure is like Konoha's and there's some sort of Elder Council or something. And anyway, the strongest nins after Gaara might very well be Temari and Kankuro. They're children of the Past Kazekage, too.

If Gaara bites it -- and this is OBVIOUSLY Akatsuki's fault -- relations between Sand and Konoha might actually get STRONGER. Afterall, they will have a common enemy to get rid of.

I think it's pretty well said that Sand is in a much WORSE position power-wise than Konoha, what with the Wind Country Lord trying to choke off their assets. I very much doubt that Sand would turn against Konoha at this point in time, because then not only will they be weak, they'll also have no Kazekage. And Konoha has been a good ally, what with sending some of their best nins to help retrieve Gaara.
