This was insane, Makoto thought as he pushed a particularly annoying strand of purple hair away from his eyes. It was absolutely insane. Of course, there was no other choice now, was there?

Shinno Haru had to be eliminated.

The sadistic member of the Locks had upped his usual tormenting of Hoshino. The ebony-haired girl jumped at every sound, fearing the presence of the spiky-haired boy at every turn. From the hollows beneath her eyes, Hoshino had not been sleeping well and to Makoto, it seemed like she would snap at any moment. A look at Haru's face in the hallways proved that he enjoyed breaking Hoshino's mind much more than trying to break her body.

Of course, having Hoshino in such a delicate situation meant that both Shinji and Seino Setsuna were upset as well. Shinji in particular had to have someone with him constantly, for fear he would give into his infamous temper and simply start pounding the snot out of Haru in the middle of Trigonometry.

That wouldn't do at all.

Sei had chosen a different path, choosing to be almost obsessively aware of Hoshino's every movement. The normally stoic boy was like a cat in a room full of rocking chairs -- it didn't help that every time he looked at Hoshino, it seemed like he was expecting her to lose control of her powers and obliterate the school.

Makoto sighed and walked over to where Hoshino stood with her back against a wall. Her bright blue eyes flickered to him, and to his annoyance, resumed warily eyeing the whole area. Makoto didn't like to see Hoshino in such a state. While she tried to be brave and act normally, he could tell that it was just a front.

"Hoshi-ko," he greeted her, standing right beside her against the wall.

"Makoto," she returned.

Makoto barely covered the wince as he listened to the flat tone that had replaced her normally cheerful voice. Instead of berating her, which he knew would do no good at all and probably just upset her more, he did what he did best. He lifted his arm, fitting it easily over Hoshino's shoulders and tugging her to him. Hoshino stiffened and resisted at first, but finally gave in and sagged against Makoto, her hands fisting loosely into his shirt.

"It's okay, Hoshi-ko. It's going to be okay." His hands traced idle paths across the girl's back and shoulders, trying to ease the tension there. Hoshino didn't answer, so he continued. "We'll get the bastard, Hoshi-ko. Don't worry about that. We'll make him suffer."

There was a sniff. "But I don't want you to get hurt too," was the soft response.

Makoto hugged his friend tighter.

It was all he could do.
