The softest smile that Quatre had ever seen on his friend's face answered him. "Honestly...?" he echoed. "It's the best thing that ever happened to me." He shot a glance over at Heero, and lowered his voice almost to a whisper. "It's just that... sometimes..."
Suddenly, Quatre stood up straighter and snapped his fingers, interrupting whatever Duo had been about to say. "That means I can give this to you now!" he exclaimed. "Thank God. Trowa and I had absolutely no idea what to do with them."
"N...nani?" Duo and Heero both stared as Quatre bounded across the room and picked up a small gray box, about the same size as a camera case. He handed it to Duo with an air of relief.
Duo looked down at the box, and back up at Quatre. "What's this, Quat?" he said as he started pulling it open.
Quatre made a face. "It's a... get-well present from Dorothy. It arrived in the mail a few months ago." He sighed. "That's one smart girl. I don't know what Trowa said that tipped her off, but..."
Duo looked in the box, and blanched. "Dorothy gave you these?" he choked.
Quatre nodded, with a sour expression. "You see that we couldn't just throw them out? She might be offended. But this way, it's a legitimate gift to a friend!"
Duo lifted the padded handcuffs and dangled them in front of his face, a look of horrified fascination on her face. "No fuckin' way, Quatre!"
"Please?" Quatre said earnestly. "Just take them away with you. That's all. If one of my staff found them..." He shuddered. "I'd never live it down."
Heero looked from Duo's face, to Quatre's. "Is there something I'm missing here?" he said uncertainly. "They're just handcuffs."
Duo and Quatre looked at each other for a moment, and then Duo dropped them back in the box. "Tell you what," he said to the blond. "I'll take them off with me if you explain it to him."
